Trial Launch

Callaghans Lane Level Crossing near Quirindi has been selected for a $1.2 million trial of the Rail Active Crossing System (RAXS) — the first time this technology will be used in New South Wales. The trial aims to improve safety at regional and remote rail crossings, where traditional upgrades can be costly and challenging to implement. RAXS is a modular, low-cost system that uses wireless, train-activated technology to detect approaching trains and automatically trigger flashing lights and warning bells for motorists. The site was chosen based on strict suitability criteria, including its previous accident history, making it an ideal location to test how the technology performs under real-world conditions.

How It Works

The RAXS system is designed to turn a passive crossing into an active one, giving drivers clear, automated warnings whenever a train approaches. It is solar-powered, wireless, and features a modular design, meaning it can be installed quickly with minimal disruption to the surrounding area. Compared with traditional active crossings, RAXS requires less ongoing maintenance and can operate effectively in remote areas where access for service crews is limited. In the rare event of a disruption or fault, the system automatically reverts to stop-sign mode, ensuring drivers are still alerted to the crossing. This smart fail-safe helps address some of the challenges historically associated with implementing active crossings in regional parts of the state.

Partnership and Funding

The trial is being led by Transport for NSW in partnership with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) and Rail Safety Systems, the company behind the technology. Funding comes from both levels of government, with $715,000 from the NSW Government and $500,000 from the Australian Government’s Regional Australia Level Crossing Safety Program, reflecting a shared commitment to improving regional rail safety. Preparatory track and roadwork were completed earlier in 2025 to ready the site for installation, ensuring the system can be implemented smoothly and safely. Transport for NSW has indicated that if the trial is successful, it could serve as a blueprint for similar crossings across regional NSW, helping reduce costs and improve safety more widely.

Faster, Safer, Cheaper

If the trial proves successful, RAXS could make upgrading regional crossings significantly faster and more cost-effective. According to Transport for NSW, up to three sites could be upgraded for the cost of one traditional crossing, meaning more communities could benefit from active safety measures sooner. Installation at Callaghans Lane is scheduled in the coming months, with rigorous testing to follow, ensuring the system is reliable and safe before full operation. The trial is expected to run through mid-2026, and if the results are positive, it could mark a major step forward in making regional rail crossings smarter, safer, and more efficient — all while reducing ongoing maintenance and infrastructure costs.
